Here’s all the ingredients, quantities and timings you’ll need to make my Chocolate Daleks. For full construction instructions check out the making video on my social media which I’ve treated as a simultaneous audition tape for Blue Peter presenter and Dr’s companion.
Makes 2 small Daleks.
INGREDIENTS:
Decoration:
Maltesers - at least 36
Aero Balls - mint chocolate
Mikado sticks or similar
Tunnocks Teacakes - at least 2 so you can find the perfect pair
Chocolate digestives - or similar, appropriately sized biscuit
Mini Marshmallows
Chocolate Sprinkles
Cake:
1/2 tsp coffee powder
2 tbsp boiling water
50g soft salted butter
1 large egg
50g white granulated sugar
65g plain flour (for gluten free use 75g self raising mix and no baking powder)
1/2 tsp baking powder
10g cocoa
Ganache:
200g milk chocolate
130g double cream
Filling:
100g of double cream
2 heaped teaspoons of cherry jam
HOW TO:
Cake.
• Butter and dust with cocoa powder two 200ml takeaway coffee cups.
**DON’T BAKE IN ANY CARDBOARD TAKEAWAY CUP THAT ISN’T DESIGNED FOR HOT LIQUIDS**
• Add 2 tbsp of boiling water to 1/2 a teaspoon of coffee powder in a small jug or cup and set aside for later.
• Add all other cake ingredients to a mixing bowl and beat, stop as soon as everything is just combined.
• Pour the warm coffee into the batter and fold through.
• When the batter is smooth, divide it between the coffee cups, place the coffee cups in a cake tin for stability and bake at 160ºc for 27 minutes.
• The cakes are cooked when a skewer comes out clean, leave them to cool completely in their cups.
Ganache.
• Break the chocolate up as small as you can into a heatproof bowl.
• Heat the cream to just steaming and pour over the chocolate.
• Leave for 5 minutes and then start to stir the cream and chocolate together until fully mixed and uniform.
• Leave the ganache to chill so it firms to a spreadable peanut butter / chocolate spread consistency. You can put it in the fridge but if gets too solid to spread heat it briefly in the microwave until it loosens again. When you’re happy with the consistency you can cover your daleks with it.
Filling.
• Very lightly whip the cream until it’s really just a bit frothy, it will thicken further when the jam is added.
• Add your jam of choice and fold through the cream. Put the filling in a piping bag and use.
Enjoy,
